Reports to: Environmental/Compliance Leader
General Responsibilities:
- Train and supervise lab technicians; coordinate routine lab analyses and manpower schedule
- Supervise all Quality Control analysis related to ammonia, urea, ammonia nitrate, ammonia thiosulphate, intermediate gases, liquid effluents, de-mineralized water and cooling water
- Carry out all analyses essential for maintaining quality of fertilizer production processes
- Assist process engineers and area supervisors with chemistry issues and process improvements
- Represent Koch Fertilizer Canada in corporate UAN study group
- Implement corporate lab standards including potential implementation of a LIMS database
- Prepare Standard Operating Procedures for instruments used in the laboratory
- Develop capital budget on instruments to replace prior to failure
- Develop PM program for lab instruments, arrange for training on and maintenance of equipment
- Review current methods and instruments to ensure cost optimization; develop and improve testing methods in consultation with Compliance Leaders
- Assess and follow through with product quality concerns on and off-site
- Improve capability of analytical work in satellite control rooms
- Review MSDS of incoming controlled products
- Participate in achieving EH&S objectives and compliance to Koch’s management system, policies and procedures
- Participate in EH&S-related studies including HAZOP, HAZID, Root Cause Analysis, Risk Assessment and audits
Hiring Criteria:
- Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry or related science field from an accredited post secondary institution; Masters in Chemistry or related field is preferred
- At least three (3) years of experience in a laboratory, operations or technical support role for a chemical processing facility; five (5) years of experience working in a lab as a chemist is preferred
- Proven leadership ability, able to work independently with a high level of integrity
- Ability to operate standard lab equipment and develop methods to optimize analysis process
- Ability to provide leadership complemented by the drive to deliver results
- Strong computer and communication skills
- Excellent work ethic, ability to work well in a team environment and exemplify a strong safety culture
